GeneWeb
Office Applications - Misc.
Some of us are blessed with the ability to remember names. Others can remember dates, and still others can remember family relationships. The rare person can put it all together, and tell you the birthday of your aunt's cousin's stepson's grandchild. The rest of us can let our computers store the information, and click our way through the family tree.

You'll have to do some sleuthing first to get the information, but after that, GeneWeb will remember it for you and piece together all those confusing relationships. After you've connected to the database with your Web browser, you can search for relatives by name or alias (GeneWeb even makes suggestions when you get the spelling wrong), get a list of the whole database, or ask to see this month's anniversaries of births, deaths, and marriages. If you still can't find what you need, you can do an advanced search for facts like the person's occupation and the dates of births, deaths, baptisms, and burials. If you still don't have enough information to make a search, pick male or female and go down the resulting list until something jogs your memory.

Having (finally) found the person you want, you'll be presented with all the information GeneWeb has about him or her, and links to reports about the person's ancestors, descendants, cousins, siblings, etc., complete with family tree diagrams. The cross-references will have you clicking for days.

In case you're worried that you have too large a family, know that GeneWeb author Daniel de Rauglaudre uses it to maintain a database of European royalty which currently has 48,781 entries. If your family's larger than that, you shouldn't be playing with genealogy software, you should be looking for a city you can rent for Thanksgiving dinner.
