Welcome to the World of Linux! Unless you're an experienced Unix person,
Linux can be frightening at first. Even I, Dave Franklin, Windows
Software Maven, needed a little help to get my first Linux box up and
running.
I got that help from my local Linux Users Group [LUG], which was full of
the nicest and most knowledgable people I've ever met. For an excellent
list of local Linux Users Groups compiled by the fine folks at Linux Journal, please click here.
If you're not close to any of the listed groups, there's plenty of Linux
help available online. A good place to start looking for it is this site.
You may also want to check out different pre-packaged Linux
distributions. There's a whole bunch of them out there. I use Red Hat Linux myself, but I also like
Linux Mandrake and
Caldera's latest Open
Linux, both of which are a breeze to install and set up, even for
first-time Linux users.
TurboLinux, S.u.S.E., Debian, and Slackware are
popular and well-regarded Linux distributions too, but they take a
little more knowledge to figure out than the first three I mentioned.
Macintosh users have their own Linux distribution: MkLinux. Learn all
about it here.
And, of course, my own tutorials list is
getting bigger and better every week, so it's a fine place to look for
all kinds of Linux information. In fact, if you spot an exceptionally
useful online Linux manual, "How To" document or tutorial that I should
list, please tell me about it here. You don't have
to fill in all the information on the form, just the URL and a couple of
words of description, and I'll take it from there.
Thanks,
