It's a Girl !

Sorry for the lack of news here lately, but the news at home is the arrival of my little baby girl ! So obviously, I've been pretty busy lately. It's a new experience for everybody, but we're laerning fast. Everybody is doing fine, and hopefully by this week end we'll be settled in, and we can start training the new LinuxForKids team member !

Nineword is a new letter quiz game. MoonBuggy is a little console game.

We received one more entry in our logo contest. Please go vote !

News   April 10th , 2000

The voting booths are open ! Now is the time to go and vote for the best logo. If you have an idea for a different design, we are still accepting submissions.

Manuel Gutierrez Algaba wrote to point us to his crosswords page. There are all kinds of crosswords: Linux terms, Python terms, LaTex terms, and general German or English vocabulary. You will need a browser with Javascript enabled to be able to play. You can also download the whole thing and play offline.

News   April 7th , 2000

Susanne Reininger from the German online magazine ComputerChannel wrote an article about Debian-jr and LinuxForKids. Non-German reader can try Babelfish. (The result may be hard to read ....)

News   April 4th , 2000

Anne Marie Mafhouf wrote to tell us about her first game: kard. It is inspired by the "memory" game where you have to match 2 identical cards. Congratulations.

Philippe Banwarth wrote to mention that his game gTans has a new version out.

Bill Kendrick, the author of Circus Linux has written another game ! This time it's Bugsquish. Get those bugs before they get you !

A few interesting entries from Freshmeat: ZipSlack is a Slackware based distribution, bundled with ZipSpeak to provide a distribution geared towards blind computer users, another astronomy software: 3D Planetary and finally gTempConv is a little perl/gtk temperature converter (Celsius, Fahreneit, Rankin, and more).

A couple of updates: Xrally now at version 0.9 is becoming one of our favorite. atomix is now at 2.2, and is harder than the 2.0 version due to the addition of a time limit to complete the puzzles.

We have received a few submissions already for the logo contest. You can preview them here.

LinuxForKids Logo Contest

Since we're far from being graphic artists, we have decided to open a contest for a new LinuxForKids logo. Everybody is invited to submit an entry (or more than one if you wish) to become The New Logo. Entries will be posted on a page on this web site, and all visitors will be invited to vote on their favorites. The contest will be open and votes will be cast until April 22, 2000.

There will be 2 categories. One for a banner type logo such as the old logo you can still see on some other pages on this site, with the word "LinuxForKids", and the dimensions shall be about 700x150 pixels. No other words, but small objects are permitted, such as balloons, little Tux, stars or whatever your imagination dictates. Special effects from The Gimp are welcome.

The second category is more open: Anything that will represent what LinuxForKids is for: promoting the use of Linux for children's entertainment and education. Show how much fun Linux can be ! No writing required. Entries should be about 300x180pixels.

All entries must be in png or jpeg format, the winning entry will become property of LinuxForKids, but the author will always be mentioned by name. All entries should be scalable for use on smaller printed literature such as CD cover or banner for other web sites, and dimensions are negotiable. We will be giving some (small) prizes to the winning entries, although we're not quite sure what yet ... When possible, please send a URL to your entry to submit@linuxforkids.com where we can go and get the file. If that's not possible ,feel free to email us your file.

Happy drawing !

Two new arcade games this week:

Missile command is a nice port of the famous Missile game.
Breaky is a new breakout style game.

In the strategy games category, we have Xpuyopuyo, another tetris clone, similar to Columns, but made for 2 players, and
Gtraffic is a block puzzle game for Gnome, where you have to move blocks around so you can get the red block out.

Doug Loss and Pete St Onge from SEUL have written a really nice editorial on Freshmeat about Linux as a tool for education in schools.

News   March 14th , 2000

Since we're into updates, Circuslinux has a new version out, Tux - A Quest for Herrings has moved to Sourceforge, and so has Letters and numbers.

The Text only page has also been brought up to date.

And Finally, Gutenbook is getting better everyday (almost) with 3 new releases in 2 weeks !

News   March 13th , 2000

Lots of reader's feedback this week:

David Weekly wrote to mention the new version of his Othello, the console version of the Othello game. This is a bug fix release.

Ismael Orenstein, the author of Xrally, wrote to let us know he has a new home at LinuxGames. The game is now at version 0.9.

John Noe sent us the link to his Computer Technology in Education page. It is a very thorough and interesting collection of links to educational resources, including some High schools web sites, and a Linux section.

Thank to all the readers who have contributed.

It's been kind of quiet here lately. For one thing, there hasn't been a lot of "children oriented" news lately, the other thing is that we are working on creating a dynamic version of this site, where readers will be able to post comments and rate the various titles we have listed. We hope to have this ready in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, you can check out BombOBomb, which has a new version out: 1.0.10. If you have a 3D card, Tuxracer is a downhill ski race type of game.

News   February 29th , 2000

We had a couple readers ask us to describe what LinuxForKids stood for, and what we were trying to accomplish. We realized that our original mission statement was being pushed further and further down the news chain, to the point where nobody can find it any more. So we updated it and are glad to present our new Mission Statement.

From the Linux Game Tome: Bumprace is a space bump-car race, where you have to go across the screen while avoiding the walls and various flying objects. The collision algorithm still needs a little work (you can "push" through sometimes), the game overall is high quality with good graphics and sound support.

Magnus Norddahl from ClanLib.org wrote to let us know that the new (1.3) Hermes library (required by ClanLib 4.0) is in fact available from the ClanLib web site, not the Hermes web site.

The March edition of the LinuxJournal mentioned LinuxForKids in the "cooking with Linux" series, this time on "Educational morsels". Thanks to Jeff Wadell from KidsGames for the heads up, and Marcel Gagné for writing the article.

News   February 23th , 2000

Something that was requested a few times by our readers is an age rating for the various titles we have. We have a very primitive version of that on the ftp site. We are trying to get this table in some dynamic format so that you can complete it on-line. In the mean time you can just email us with your entries.

News   February 22th , 2000

We added a link to our ftp site from our support page, where you can find the general files that are on our Games Collection CD.

The Letters and numbers game is now up to version 0.1.9. The main improvement for the earlier version we had reviewed a few months ago is the capability to have sound files. It's really cool ! You click on the letters, and a picture appears (for example Elephant for E), while the computer says "Elephant". Not all the pictures have a sound associated with them, but you can record your own.

News   February 18th , 2000

From LinuxGameTome: it looks like car racing is popular these days ! We looked at Xrally a few weeks ago, it is now up to version 0.8.1. and is now playable ! There is also a game called Race that uses ClanLib.
And if you have a 3D card, you can try SpaceRacer, a 3D car racing in space !

The ClanLib development kit, a SDK to write games for Linux and Windows has a new version 4.0 out. ClanLib is used by such games as Pingus and ClanBomber, BTW Pingus has a new version out too. There seems to be problems with the ClanLib dependencies though ... we couldn't get the kit to install properly.

Gutenbook has a new web site : www.Gutenbook.org and version 1.3 is out.

Bill Kendrick is a very busy guy ! He already brought us Bobobot, GemDropX and MadBomber. They are all on the Arcade page. He's back with Circuslinux, the famous clown jumping, balloon popping game. It's a good one, go get it !

The Gutenberg Project was started almost 20 years ago by Michael Hart. His goal was (and still is) to provide anybody who wants it a plain text version of any book ever published, at the lowest possible cost (via electronic medium), and in a way so easy the user shouldn't have to worry about how it's done. Obviously, the only books you can download are the ones that are now in the Public Domain. This includes all the roman and greek classics, and books by authors such as Charles Dickens, Alexandre Dumas, Honoré de Balzac, and Robert Louis Stevenson. To quote the web site, there are 3 main categoris:

There are three portions of the Project Gutenberg Library, basically be described as: Light Literature; such as Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, Peter Pan, Aesop's Fables, etc. Heavy Literature; such as the Bible or other religious documents, Shakespeare, Moby Dick, Paradise Lost, etc. References; such as Roget's Thesaurus, almanacs, and a set of encyclopedia, dictionaries, etc.
Great ressources for parents and teachers !

Gutenbook is a little Perl gem that will fetch the catalog of all available titles from the Gutenberg web site, let you choose the book you want to read, and present it on-screen 2 pages at a time. Although this is a new project, it is already very well advanced and definitly worth a try to browse the Gutenberg archives.

News   February 11th , 2000

Linda Hanigan wrote to us to mention Ace of Penguins. This is a nice collection of solitaire games.

From Freshmeat: The Penguin Machine (hosted by SEUL), is now up to version 0.0.5. We had tried 0.0.2 and couldn't get it to work. Work has progressed obviously, and we can now compile and run the demo screens that are provided. It is not yet playable. All you can do is watch the balls fall from the top while bouncing on the bars. No player interaction yet. The original Incredible Machine was really a great game, so we wish the author the best of luck, and hopefully we'll have a working version pretty soon.

Bill Kendrick is a very busy guy ! He already brouhgt us Bobobot, GemDropX and MadBomber. He's back with Circuslinux, the famous clown jumping, balloon popping game. It's a good one, go get it !

We have had a Text only version of this page for a while now. We also have started making all the different pages available in text only versions. In order to improve our access to people with disabilities, we ran this page through the Bobby checker and we are glad to report that we passed the test. We will now be displaying the "Bobby logo" on the right side.

News   February 7th , 2000

Here are 2 games found on Freshmeat:

Xinvaders 3D is a 3D version of the classic space invaders.
Columns is a nice tetris like game.

We finally wrote something up for the French version of this page. You can read it here or at the top of this page.
