The statistic comes out of a study by OMNI Consulting Group of more than 3,000 business organizations worldwide. The report looks at the economic impact of network intrusions as well as at how security breaches happen, says Frank Bernhard, a managing principal at OMNI, based here. The firm's 5.57 percent statistic is an average; for some companies the cost of an intrusion would be much higher, he says.
Companies have focused so much energy on building applications and putting their businesses online that they forgot about security, he says.
