Java Support
Java 1.1 Application Support
VisualRoute 4.1b for Windows
requires one of the following for Java support:
- Microsoft's Java VM build 5.00.3167 or
later (may be installed with MS Internet Explorer 5.0)
- Sun's JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.1 or
later
How to check your Java build/version.
- For Microsoft's Java. Find
msjava.dll (\system directory for
Windows 95/98 and \system32 for Windows NT), go to Properties and the
version number is listed.
- For Sun's JRE. Run
'java -version' (or 'jre') from a DOS prompt
and the version number will be displayed (e.g.: 1.1.4).
How to install or upgrade Java.
You can easily install Java 1.1 application support in one of several ways:
- Install Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5
. During setup, select the Custom Installation Option (not Typical Installation) and select Microsoft Virtual
Machine.
- Install only the Microsoft Java VM without
Internet Explorer. This is the best option if you prefer to use Netscape Navigator
and do not want to install the full IE. The MS Java VM works stand-alone (with or without Internet Explorer).
For Win98: select Windows Update from the Start menu, then select Microsoft Virtual Machine for download.
For Win95/98/NT: download and install the
Microsoft Virtual Machine for Win95/98/NT (7,212Kb) from
ftp.visualroute.com, or see the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine
Web Site for download and installation information.
- Install Sun's
JRE (Java Runtime Environment).
Please note: If you are using the Microsoft
Java VM, the minimum version required for VisualRoute 4.1a has changed from the
4.0c version. If you are upgrading your version of VisualRoute for Windows, you may also need to upgrade to the latest
Java VM.
Java 1.0.x or Java 1.1.x.
Internet Explorer 3.x installs Java 1.0.x support. Internet Explorer 4.x (or VM build 4.79.2424 or later) installs Java 1.1.x
support.
A Special Note for Netscape Navigator Users
Netscape Navigator currently does not support
Java applications, only Java applets!
Applet vs. Application.
There are two types of Java programs. One is called a Java applet and the
other is called a Java application. The most important distinction between
these two is the security restrictions imposed upon Java applets. Applets
are run in a security 'sandbox' that prevents them from running other
programs, accessing your disk drive or memory, etc. Due to the security
restrictions of applets, VisualRoute was written as a Java application.
Installing Java 1.1 Application Support.
You can install any Windows Java VM that supports Java applications in order
to run VisualRoute. However, we recommend the Microsoft Java VM because it
runs VisualRoute several times faster than any other Java VM we have tested.
To install only the Microsoft Java VM without Internet Explorer,
please refer to our
java support
section above for details.
Contacting Netscape. I have contacted Netscape about supporting
Java applications but they do not seem interested. Will you join
me in providing
feedback
to Netscape and let them know that you want Java application support?
