Microsoft^® virtual machine (Microsoft VM) build 3188 is designed to run on Microsoft^® Windows^® 95, Microsoft^® Windows^® 98, and Microsoft^® Windows NT^® 4.0 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later.

This release of the Microsoft VM (build 3188) primarily addresses security vulnerabilities. This build encompasses the "virtual machine verifier" vulnerability mentioned in the Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS99-045) as well as the "sandbox" vulnerability fixed in build 3186. Additional information about the "sandbox" vulnerability is available in Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS99-031).

Instructions

1. Installation prerequisite for Windows NT users: Windows NT4 Service Pack 3 or later must be installed prior to installing the Microsoft VM on x86 or Compaq DIGITAL Alpha architectures.

2. If you have run any Java applets in the current browser session, exit and restart the browser. Return to this page to continue with the download procedure.

3. In the list below, select the self-extracting file that you wish to download.

4. When prompted, save the file to your hard drive.

5. Double-click the downloaded file on your hard drive, and follow the instructions that appear.

6. Post-installation procedure for developers using jvc

   The following procedure is required for SDK for Java users who compile with the Microsoft compiler for Java (jvc). If jvc will not be run, omit this step to save disk space.

   When the installation is finished, use the following command to run the clspack tool:

   clspack -auto

   Clspack creates a Classes.zip file in the %WINDIR%\Java\Classes directory that contains all Java packages currently installed by the package manager. The Microsoft compiler for Java (jvc) checks this location by default. If you use another Java compiler that does not check this location, set your CLASSPATH variable as follows:

   C:\>set CLASSPATH=%WINDIR%\java\classes\classes.zip;%classpath%
