September, 1998 Issue

This month, you'll find everything from how to design dialog mechanisms that don't get in the way to how to serve up a never-fail apricot soufflé (really). In between is another exciting episode in Tog's travels in Japan, along with a hard-hitting opinion column on the vital role of editors penned by yours truly. Enjoy.

Ask Tog Column
The Polite Interface
Reader Par Olsson suggests we stop harrassing users. Tog agrees and offers some quick guidelines on communicating without interrupting.

Designer's Corner
The Complexity Paradox
Tog proves software developers are doomed to full employement. And he just might be right.

Designer Book of the Month
Web Pages that Suck
I can always tell when Tog has found a book on design he really likes. He paces the AskTog offices alternating between, " I could have written that!" and "Wow, how did they..." and "Gosh, I never even though about...". This month, he never stopped pacing.

Check it out on the book list this month.

Travel
Japan on $1000 a day
Tog's travel adventures continue as he faces the twin challenges of spraying toilets and poisonous fish. Find out who wins in this month's episode.

Lighter Side
Scribblemonger on Editing
Excuse the "lighter-side" heading for this, but it was the only way Tog would let this in. Check out what this webzine might look like if I weren't around.

Cook's Corner
Apricot Soufflé
Yes, Tog used to cook professionally. Both Italian and French kitchens have felt his presence. He might very well have grown to be one of the greats if his malpractice insurance had not become prohibitively expensive.

Check out his truly never-fail soufflé. Even I can cook it.
