USER FRIENDLY IN DEUTSCH!
Head on over to Benutzer Freundlich!

Heike and Winy are UFies in Germany who have started translating the strips from the beginning of the archives, one per day. It takes a particular skill to translate nuances of the geek culture. For example, how do you translate 555-BABY? or "Where do you want to go today?" or "Damn, I'm out of rockets!" ;-)

I'm sure that the 15,000 people from Germany who are now reading UF on a regular basis will soon let us know if this translation is a good one. If anyone wants to send comments to Heike and Winy they can contact them at telma@online.de

TUESDAY IS NATIONAL TECHIE DAY
We are writing to you on behalf of the Admin. Staff of IXC Communications in Louisville, Ky. As you know, next Tuesday is National Techies Day. We have several activities planned to honor our Technical Staff (our Geek friends) 8-) We are wondering how UF is planning to celebrate. We have many UFies on our staff here, who we know would enjoy including UF in the activities of the day. We would be grateful for any ideas or suggestions that you might have to help us make our National Techies Day celebration one to remember!! - Glenda Gray, Receptionist; Kristie Maulin, Administrative Asst.

Good question! My suggestions: install Windows 98 on all of their workstations, and Windows NT on any Linux or BSD servers in the office. They'll love you for it. ;) Seriously though, treat your techs with tender loving care. Pizza, Jolt Cola, piles and piles of junk food and cool techie books and videos will brighten any tech's day. Let them play Rainbow Six or Quake or Team Fortress on the office network, and see if you can't get Neal Stephenson or someone else cool like that to drop by and chat with them. They'll love you forever.

Nice to see techies being appreciated. I commend the both of you for having the heart to care!

PERSONAL BOOKSHELF KAPUT
This was sent in by DigDug:

Personal Bookshelf (http://www.pbs.mcp.com/) will be shutting down on October 11th, and will be replaced by "MyInformIT" (http://www.informit.com/)

I have checked the books at that site (http://www.informit.com/itlibrary/), and it has not nearly as many books as PBS. In fact, the only two operating systems - Win95 and Win98.

Hmmm. One can only hope that the library will develop quickly.

ITEMS OF NOTE

Join the UFie BBS! Harkening back to the halcyon days of dial-up Bulletin Boards, the UFie BBS can be reached at http://bbs.ufies.org and telnet://bbs.ufies.org. Tradewars and Lord and other famous BBS door games are available, as are message boards, Fidonet feeds, and more! Thanks go to Moe, the generous chap who set the whole thing up and paid for the license!

Join the UFie Webring! No, it's not just a ring of sites with UF cartoons all over them, it's a collective of sites run by UFies, and you'll find a wide assortment of interests here. You can start at the UFie Webring HQand surf from there. Thanks to Dramoth for getting it going!

Have you joined the RC5 Bovine Project at distributed.net? Were you thinking about it? Well, there's a UFie Team there looking for your help! Just edit your team affiliation to 10938 in your participant information and you're in. Let's put all of that processing power to use and get cracking! There's an info page at http://rc5.ufies.org/help.htmlThanks to Dave Easterly for getting the ball rolling.

Join Team UFie on the SETI@Home Project:Thanks to the efforts of Latheos and others, there's a Team UFie for the SETI@Home Project. Details can be found here. If you want to see how well Team UFie is doing, check here.

Geek Communications: There's a permanent User Friendly IRC channel at Undernet; the channel name is #userfriendly, naturally. Drop by and say hello! Also, check out the UF mailing lists that are growing daily, or alt.comics.user-friendly on your favourite news server, or at DejaNews.

UFie Virtual Gathering Place: Thanks to the efforts of the mighty Arcterex, there's a place for UFies to "hang out." I'm not sure if that's referring to body parts or not, but either way it's a cool site to visit. Check it out at http://ufies.org/.

LINK OF THE DAY

A harbinger: My boss keeps insisting this will happen, sooner rather than later. Microsoft Linux details all of the, uh, improvements that Microsoft might make to our beloved OS. Just think - the MSN daemon replacing the need to hassle with pppd, or maybe you'd like some Active-XWindows. Scary, eerie, and really funny. Thanks to the inimitable Ara for today's potentially prophetic link.
