
Trace Route 66 uses the traceroute program to determine the
route across a network taken by packets from one host to
another host.
In this case, the traceroute will start from the host
server, and display the path taken to reach the a visitor's
machine. A connection from your ISP to a server usually goes
through about 10-15 different 'highways, streets, and
bridges'. A traceroute shows the path your connection takes
to get to the server. If there is an Internet problem along
the way to the server a traceroute will often show this.
When you cannot access your web site or are having trouble
connecting, it often helps to do a traceroute test.
You can use Trace Route 66 to verify connectivity of a host
and determine how the host is connected to the Internet. You
can also determine the path taken. This allows you to
determine where packet loss may be occurring. It will also
allow you to determine whether routing difficulties, either
on the Internet or on your network, may explain problems
connecting to the host.
How does it work? Trace Route 66, via the Traceroute
application on your server, exploits a feature called TTL or
time-to-live. TTLs are needed so that packets doesn't go
around for ever. TraceRoute 66 features include:
