This Getting Started Guide provides detailed instructions for using the Test Drive Edition of the iPlanet Application Server software. This guide has been designed to step you through many of the functions provided by the iPlanet Application Server. You will be able to evaluate the server's features using sample applications provided with this guide. You can find the latest version of this document on the iPlanet Web Site.

The Test Drive Edition

The iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition, is a J2EE platform for delivering application services to a broad range of servers, clients, and devices. The Test Drive Edition is a full-featured version of the Enterprise Edition software that will let you install and run applications on the iPlanet Application Server. The Test Drive Edition automatically installs the PointBase Network Database Server and the iPlanet Directory Server to allow you to use the iPlanet Application Server without configuring the product for your existing database and directory server. If you encounter any problems during your evaluation, you may want to check the updated list of known issues.

Note: This documentation is for Phase II of the iPlanet Application Server, Test Drive Edition. If you are using the Phase I product, you should either download the latest version or use the Phase I documentation. You can tell that you are using the Phase I version if you downloaded it prior to May 25, 2001 or your download file name is ias60SP2Eval-solaris.tar.gz or ias60SP2Eval-nt.zip.

Changes in Phase II

iPlanet has responded to evaluations of the iPlanet Application Server "Test Drive" and announces the release of Phase II. Enhancements include:

• A streamlined installer that simplifies installation. Default values are used for user-ids, passwords and port numbers.
• Installer checks for system resources and required components and warns when there are issues.
• Application Server instance is automatically registered to the Administration Tool
• Enhancements to the Installation and Getting Started Guide based on Phase I input.
• Expanded information on Application Server Developer Tools and links to download and experience Forté for Java and Application Server integration.
• The Application Server documentation has been removed from the product distribution and links to the most up to date documentation are provided.

Evaluation License

To obtain an evaluation license to use the Test Drive Edition of the iPlanet Application Server, please visit www.iplanet.com/testdrive. The Test Drive Edition evaluation license is good for sixty (60) days.
