RED 1.2
Copy Policy: Free for Personal Use
Red is a text editor running under Unix and X Windows. It was developed at the Basser Department of Computer Science as part of the Blue Programming Environment. The original version of Red runs in the integrated programming environment for Blue, but a stand-alone version of the editor has been produced. This stand-alone version lacks all the features that are specificly tailored for Blue, but rather acts as a normal general purpose text editor.

It was designed to be both easy to use and flexible. The Blue environment is aimed at beginners, so consequently Red is designed with non-expert users in mind. The basic editing functions are easy to understand and to use. Some effort was made to combine this ease of use with some flexibility and power so that users are not artificially held on a non-expert level over a long period of time by the editor. (Some programs that claim to be "idiot-proof" tend to treat the users as idiots and take care that they remain as such...) It is intended that a user with growing expertise can use Red in a more powerful way, making Red a good choice for expert users as well.
