egcs is an experimental step in the development of GCC, the
GNU C compiler.
It's designed with more reexamination of
basic architectural decisions of gcc and an interest in
adding new optimizations, work with the groups who have
fractured out from gcc2 (like the Linux kernel folks, the
Intel optimizations folks, Fortran folks) including more
front-ends, and an open development model for the
development process.
