Now that I'm back to feeling normal, I think I'll start
working on all those fun projects I had scheduled for last
weekend. I'm never satisfied with what passes for state of
the art here at Casa Dave, and with Linux I get to tweak,
reconfigure, and improve as much as I want. No wonder I love
this operating system so much!
On one of my frequent computer hardware acquisition sprees,
I couldn't resist the temptation of purchasing a nice little
RAID setup. Oh, sorry, that means Redundant Array of
Independent Disks. It's high-capacity storage with a plus:
should one of your RAID disks fail, simply replace the disk.
You won't lose any data -- remember, the "R" in RAID means
"redundant."
RAID setups aren't exactly commonplace for home users, no
matter what the operating system. If you're contemplating
such a setup for the Linux computer in your household, then
you might want to take a look at the
DPT Hardware RAID HOWTO first. This document will give
you a good idea of what it takes to set up a hardware RAID
under Linux.
The DPT Hardware RAID HOWTO describes in detail the
controllers and other hardware that Linux will support for a
RAID installation. Once you've got what you need, refer back
to this text file to find out about installing and
configuring the hardware, and configuring the Linux kernel
to deal with the new toys. All should go well, meaning
you'll see a few extra lines of text fly by during the Linux
boot-up process.
What should you do if things go wrong? Why, refer to the
troubleshooting section of this document, of course. As I
install my own RAID hardware this weekend, I'm sure I'll
visit that particular chapter more than once. For some
reason, I have an easier time installing hardware and then
figuring out what it is that I did wrong.
