Linux is a Unix-like, Posix complient, free operating system for x86 (PCs) and many others (save up for that DEC Alpha). Linux is distributed under the GNU public licence and usually comes packaged with tons of great applications developed by those wonderful people of the Free Software Foundation. Not only do you get a full fledged Unix (as good as any commercial Unix) with X-Windows, but you gain access to the thousands of free applications developed by research institutes for the Unix platform. Just about anything you can buy, you can get it's equal (or better) for free!
