There are some sites on the Web that are designed to throw money away--just toss it out the window. At least that's what you might be inclined to believe after visiting some of the many commercial Web sites out there. You can learn some valuable lessons from understanding these sites and their design...but you'll learn a lot more by studying the sites that are actually making money--now--on the Web. Like the title states, this book profiles 23 successful sites that are actually raking in the dough. If you'd like your site to make money, you owe it to yourself to at least read through this review--and make room for another book on your development bookshelf.

Author Jaclyn Easton's criteria for selecting the sites to be featured excluded sites which sell computer software or hardware, and pornography-based sites. These types of sites were (and still are) obviously easier to sell than other businesses on the Web, and as such, their story is not likely to be much help for those in other business arenas. The featured sites had to be making more profit than other similar sites, although the amount could range from thousands to millions.

Sites range from those which sell tools (the digging, cutting type), games, electronic media, to those that provide a service, such as information-based sites. The 23 Web sites include:

By reading this book, you will find out how site developers initially came up with banner ad pricing, how they sold ads, where they came up with content, and how they are doing it differently today, if indeed they are. You'll find out why some developers feel that reciprical links are money in the bank, while others feel that they are a waste of potential income.

After wading through all those books on Web site development, Java, JavaScript, Design, DHTML, XML, SMIL, etc. etc. etc., it's finally time to read a book about how folks are making money on the Web. Oh, and although I usually never do this, be sure to check out Barnes and Noble, as you can get the book there for $14.97, versus $24.95 from other sources. Don't take my word about this book though, read the first two chapters and find out for yourself!
