Linux Developer Central

Linux is a UNIX based operating system that runs on most of the common hardware architectures found in the world today. Linux was originally started by the Finnish developer Linus Torvalds (see interviews with CNET and Slashdot) and was part of the Free Software movement. More recently, it has become part of the Open Source movement, meaning that the source code is freely available for inspection and modification. Thousands of developers around the world work on the operating system and its applications as part of a public service. Consequently, the operating system and most of its applications are free.
