MAC OS USER TOOL FOR MANAGING URLS UPDATED

URL Manager Pro has been one of the best-received Mac OS-based Internet tools for helping users keep track of Web sites and manage their use of the Web. Its developer, Netscape DevEdge Program member Alco Blom, recently released version 1.4 of the shareware tool, which is closely integrated with Netscape Navigator.

URL Manager Pro 1.4 offers users the following enhancements:

• It makes use of the Shared Menus protocol to allow users to view bookmarks from a variety of applications, including Fetch, Anarchie, Eudora 3.0, and Claris Emailer 2.0.
• Through the Apple event model and AppleScript, it lets users keep a log book of their Internet travels.
• It can generate output in either HTML or MCF (Metacontent Format) files to support Netscape Navigator or Apple's new HotSauce browsing technology.
• A new tool bar, shown in the screen shot below.

URL Manager was featured in Apple Fellow and Evangelist Guy Kawasaki's keynote address at the MacWorld Expo in Boston, and it's listed on his Guy's Favorite Software Web page.

PLUG-IN DEVELOPMENT MADE EASY WITH NEW VISUAL TOOL

Desiderata Software recently announced PluginMaker, a tool for creating Netscape Navigator plug-ins using Visual C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Class l (MCL) library. Plug-ions created with the new tool will work with Navigator 2.0 and higher.

Plug-ins are built directly from Visual C++, and can take full advantage of MFC. Dialog-based plug-ins can be created, as well as plug-ins using the familiar document/view model. PluginMaker can generate both 32-bit and 16-bit plug-ins, and code can be shared by both versions (unless the 32-bit version needs to use 32-bit features.)

Dialog-based plug-ins allow you to easily embed Windows controls in plug-in windows. You simply create a dialog template; PluginMaker then takes care of creating the controls, allowing for easy resizing and repositioning of the controls.Dialog-based plug-ins also allow the plug-in window size to be controlled by the HTML author. The plug-ins can be created to stretch and shrink to fit the actual window, or to show a scroll bar if the entire plug-in window can't be viewed.
