(External RAID), RAIDION.pci (PCI attached RAID) and RAIDION.dv
(software based RAID for digital media applications). The new products combine the patented RAIDION modular enclosure system with a newly redesigned LVD "flexible backplane" . The
RAIDION.u2w modular enclosure system is capable of supporting ULTRA-2 SCSI LVD (low-voltage-differential) bus transfer rates of 80 Mbytes per second. The new
backplane also supports up to five SCSI channels per enclosure, resulting in subsystem bandwidths of 320 Mbytes/sec. The removable, hot-swappable RAIDION.u2w
disk modules can be configured for high-density desktop or rack mounted installations, seamlessly scalable from 9 Gbytes to multiple terabytes.
"Today's I.T. and digital media users are demanding faster performance from their disk storage subsystems, but they speak even more loudly on the subject of
reliability and data protection." Commented Steven Hall, President and CEO of PTG. "Reliability and data protection translate directly to reduced maintenance and
less downtime -- these are bottom-line issues for all users. RAIDION.u2w delivers superior performance on all fronts."
According to PTG, disk drive manufacturers report that up to 80% of all disk drive failures and associated data losses are attributable to poor subsystem design or
other environmental issues. Insufficient cooling, poor isolation of disk vibration, exposure to mechanical shock and electro-static discharge are the primary causes
of disk drive failure. PTG believes that RAIDION's unique design addresses each of these root failure causes.
"The RAIDION.u2w disk subsystem technology outperforms competing products
in a number of areas," commented Robert Leong, Manager of Applications Engineering for RAIDION Systems. "RAIDION provides superior protection to the
disk drive mechanisms, especially in hot-swappable RAID applications. Each module is a completely enclosed subsystem designed to be safely handled by
typical I.T. or office personnel. Second, RAIDION is truly modular in design. Users can begin with one or two disk modules on the desktop and expand that
installation to dozens or hundreds of drives, one at a time. And finally, our new LVD backplane gives these products the industry-leading data transfer rates to
complement RAIDION's outstanding enclosure design."
RAIDION Systems have won numerous industry awards and wide acclaim from
users since the products were first introduced in 1991. With tens of thousands of installations worldwide, RAIDION is a leader in the fault-tolerant storage market.
